Pye Sone Kyaw, an AI whiz at GovTech, shed light on Balefire’s mission, stating that the core aim is to “aid NEA [the National Environment Agency] in catching smokers in off-limits areas.” Violators might have to cough up a fine of up to S$200 ($148).

Despite the challenges of differentiating cigarettes from look-alike objects and the constraints of a full-proof detection model, GovTech has engineered a custom processing pipeline. The latest iteration of Balefire harnesses several models, leveraging footage from past and present versions of the AI system.
