General Motors Company (GM) will restart battery cell production at its Ultium Cells facility in Warren, Ohio, next week after a seven-month shutdown due to declining electric vehicle demand. The plant, a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, temporarily closed in January, resulting in approximately 1,330 layoffs. It is expected to employ around 1,400 workers once production resumes.
In addition to the Warren facility, GM also paused operations at its Detroit EV plant during the shutdown, impacting models like the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ. The company had initially anticipated a six-month closure, which was later extended due to ongoing challenges in the EV market.
