GM Faces Regulatory and Financial Strain Due to L87 Engine Failures

General Motors (GM) is facing significant scrutiny as its L87 6.2L V8 engine has reportedly failed again, despite being addressed in a recall affecting around 721,000 vehicles globally. The recall, initiated in April 2025, included nearly 600,000 trucks and SUVs in the United States due to manufacturing defects capable of causing internal engine failures, leading to potential engine seizures.

As of January 2026, 36 vehicle owners have reported engine failures even after following the recall’s prescribed fix, prompting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open an investigation (RQ26001). The ongoing failures have raised concerns about the adequacy of GM’s initial remedial measures and sparked a class-action lawsuit challenging the effectiveness of the solutions provided.
