Google Unveils New AI Chips Amid Competition
On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, Google launched its latest custom processors, the TPU 8t and TPU 8i, designed for cloud-based AI applications. The TPU 8t focuses on compute-intensive training workloads, boasting three times the performance, ten times faster storage access, and double the data transfer rate of its predecessor. Meanwhile, the TPU 8i is optimized for AI inference, featuring increased memory and reduced latency.
These new processors aim to enhance Alphabet’s operational efficiency in AI, with Google asserting that they provide 80% better performance-per-dollar compared to previous models. Despite these advancements, Nvidia still dominates the data center GPU market, owning 92% of it. Google’s TPU chips may offer cost-effective solutions for AI workloads but are unlikely to significantly challenge Nvidia’s computational supremacy.
