Gradiant announced plans on Tuesday to build the world’s first commercial lithium production facility in Montrose, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, using its EC² technology to extract lithium from oilfield produced water. The facility aims to support long-term U.S. lithium supply amidst increasing demands.
The site is designed to guarantee at least 95% lithium recovery and has already shown a success rate of 97% recovery with 99.5% purity for battery-grade lithium carbonate during testing. Gradiant holds a multi-year offtake agreement to provide up to 5,000 metric tonnes of battery-grade lithium annually, with commercial operations anticipated to commence in early 2026.
