Warren Buffett will hand over the CEO position of Berkshire Hathaway to Greg Abel at the end of 2025. Buffett, who has led the company since 1965, will remain as board chairman. Berkshire Hathaway, now valued at $1 trillion, has outperformed the S&P 500 under Buffett’s leadership, delivering a compound annual return of 19.7% compared to the S&P’s 10.5% during the same period.
In his final years, Buffett returned $77.8 billion to shareholders through stock buybacks, and Abel announced a resumption of buybacks earlier this month. Berkshire Hathaway currently holds $373 billion in cash and a $306 billion portfolio of publicly traded stocks, including a significant stake in Apple, worth $57 billion (18.6% of its portfolio).
Buffett’s tenure saw a $1,000 investment in Berkshire in 1965 grow to $48.4 million by 2025, while the same investment in the S&P 500 would only be worth $399,702.
