Warren Buffett’s Legacy at Berkshire Hathaway
Warren Buffett led Berkshire Hathaway from 1965 until 2025, transforming it into a $1 trillion conglomerate. During his tenure, the company’s stock delivered a compound annual return of 19.7%, significantly outperforming the S&P 500’s 10.5%. An initial investment of $1,000 in Berkshire stocks in 1965 would have grown to approximately $48.5 million by the end of 2025, compared to just $399,702 for the S&P 500.
In total, Buffett authorized $77.8 billion in stock buybacks from 2018 to 2024. Upon his retirement, Greg Abel took over as CEO in 2026 and immediately initiated buybacks worth $235 million in the first quarter, followed by $4.2 billion in the second quarter. Abel aims to continue the company’s legacy of strong returns as he navigates new investment opportunities with Berkshire’s substantial cash reserve of over $365 billion.
