Lean hog futures rose by 82 cents to $1.85 at midday on Wednesday, with the USDA reporting a national base hog price of $92.87 per hundredweight, an increase of 62 cents from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index decreased by 7 cents to $91.19 as of April 27.
The USDA’s pork carcass cutout value was reported at $98.18 per cwt, down 8 cents from the previous day. Additionally, Tuesday’s federally inspected slaughter was estimated at 488,000 head, bringing the week-to-date total to 972,000 head—down by 9,000 head compared to the prior week but up by 352 head from the same week last year.
