Lean hog futures closed steady to 45 cents higher on Wednesday, January 19, 2023. The USDA reported a national base hog price of $85.13, a $4.94 increase from the previous day, while the CME Lean Hog Index rose by 27 cents to $82.03.
The USDA’s pork carcass cutout value increased by 51 cents to $93.98 per cwt. Federally inspected hog slaughter for Wednesday was estimated at 495,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 1.404 million head. This figure is 77,000 head lower than the previous week but 64,132 head higher than the same week last year.
February 26 hogs closed at $87.850, April 26 at $95.600, and May 26 at $99.275, reflecting marginal increases.
