Hogs Decline Further on Thursday

Lean hog futures experienced midday losses of 20 to 35 cents on Friday, with October contracts priced at $78.575, down $0.325. The national average base hog price was reported at $75.94, reflecting a decrease of 78 cents from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index stood at $85.35 on September 10, down 11 cents from the prior day.

The USDA’s FOB plant pork cutout value also fell by 24 cents to $93.94 per cwt, with only the loin and belly reporting lower values. In contrast, four other primal cuts saw increases ranging from 19 cents to $2.18. The USDA estimated that hog slaughter reached 483,000 head on Thursday, contributing to a weekly total of 1.36 million head, which is 27,707 more than the same week last year.
