Lean hog futures closed out February with contracts steady to 40 cents lower, while April futures gained $2.05 this week. The USDA reported a national base hog price of $90.38 on Friday, down 62 cents from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index increased by 41 cents to $89.12 as of February 25.
USDA’s pork carcass cutout value rose 39 cents to $97.77 per cwt. Additionally, USDA estimated federally inspected hog slaughter for the week at 2.516 million head, which is 23,000 head above last week but 9,170 head below the same week last year.
