Hogs Experience Boosted Trade Activity on Tuesday

Lean hog futures experienced gains of 20 to 30 points across nearby contracts on Tuesday. The USDA’s national base hog price was not reported due to light trading volume, while the CME Lean Hog Index declined by 25 cents to $80.60 as of January 9.

The USDA reported that the pork carcass cutout value decreased by 97 cents to $92.13 per cwt. The estimated federally inspected hog slaughter on Monday was 497,000 head, which is 1,000 head lower than the previous week but 13,474 head higher than the same week last year.

Current futures prices include February 26 Hogs at $84.625 (up $0.200), April 26 Hogs at $91.050 (up $0.300), and May 26 Hogs at $95.250 (up $0.225).
