Lean hog futures were mixed on Tuesday, with contracts varying within 20 cents of unchanged. The USDA reported the national base hog price at $91.41, down 46 cents from the previous day, while the CME Lean Hog Index increased by 25 cents to $89.69 on February 27.
The USDA’s pork carcass cutout value was steady at $98.50 per cwt, though prices for ham, butt, and loin primals were lower. Tuesday’s federally inspected hog slaughter was estimated at 484,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 959,000 head; this figure is 7,000 head above last week but 5,316 head below the same week last year.
For specific futures, April 26 Hogs closed at $95.75 (up $0.175), May 26 Hogs at $99.925 (down $0.100), and June 26 Hogs remained unchanged at $109.475.
