Hogs Showcase Impressive Performance on Tuesday

Lean hog futures rose by 55 cents to $1 on Tuesday. The USDA did not report the national base hog price due to light trading volume, while the CME Lean Hog Index decreased by $1.40 on December 26 to $82.44.

In the latest USDA report, the pork carcass cutout value fell by 41 cents to $95.55 per cwt, with declines noted in the butt, picnic, and belly cuts. The estimated federally inspected hog slaughter for Monday was 444,000 head, which is 52,000 head lower than the previous week and down 41,060 head compared to the same week last year.

February 26 hog futures are currently priced at $85.475, up $1.00; April 26 hogs at $90.200, up $0.80; and May 26 hogs at $94.000, up $0.55.
