Hogs Surge After Monday’s Rally

Lean hog futures increased on Monday, with gains ranging from 12 cents to $3.22. The USDA did not report the national base hog price due to light trading. The CME Lean Hog Index fell by 16 cents to $90.01 as of April 2.

USDA’s pork carcass cutout value rose by 9 cents to $99.04 per cwt, although the butt and loin primals were reported lower. An estimated 367,000 hogs were federally inspected for slaughter on Monday, a decrease of 124,000 from the previous week and 122,275 fewer than the same week last year.

April 26 hogs closed at $90.475 (up $0.125), May 26 hogs closed at $98.775 (up $2.775), and June 26 hogs closed at $107.700 (up $3.225).
