Hogs Surge Forward on Tuesday

Lean hog futures rose by 80 cents to $1.60 in front months, with the USDA’s national base hog price at $86.27 on Tuesday morning, up $4.05 from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index decreased by 7 cents to $85.71 on January 30.

The USDA reported a pork carcass cutout value at $96.05 per cwt, an increase of 35 cents. Federally inspected hog slaughter on Monday was 461,000 head, surpassing the previous week by 35,000 but down by 15,393 compared to the same week last year.

February 26 hog futures are currently priced at $88.55, up $0.80; April 26 futures at $98.225, up $1.60; and May 26 futures at $101.975, up $1.35.
