AMD to Launch Advanced MI450 GPU
Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) plans to release its MI450 graphics processing unit (GPU) in the second half of 2023. This chip is designed to compete with Nvidia’s upcoming Rubin architecture, boasting 432 GB of HBM4 (high-bandwidth memory) and 19.6 TB/s of memory bandwidth—about 1.5 times that of Nvidia’s offerings.
Strategic Partnerships and Market Impact
AMD has secured partnerships with OpenAI and Meta Platforms to supply up to 6 gigawatts of MI450 GPUs, alongside a rollout plan that includes 50,000 GPUs to Oracle for a Helios rack system. AMD’s new rack-scale AI design aims to enhance its competitive standing against Nvidia while integrating its ROCm software platform into customer ecosystems. The deals also involve warrants that could grant shares worth 10% of the company if certain performance thresholds are met.
Context and Future Prospects
The MI450 GPU signifies a pivotal moment for AMD, as the company seeks to replicate its past successes only achieved in consumer CPUs against Intel. With improved software capabilities and high-profile clients, AMD aims to capture more market share in the AI infrastructure space.
