Market Update: Stocks Dip Amid Tensions

On Thursday, U.S. stocks declined as negotiations between the U.S. and Iran seemed to stall, with the S&P 500 finishing down 0.4%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite down 0.1%. Notably, small-cap stocks suffered significantly, with the Russell 2000 index dropping 1.6%. Oil prices rose in response to renewed tensions in the Middle East, prompting concerns over potential inflation.

The Russell 2000 has underperformed this year, greatly impacted by rising interest rates and inflationary signals. Key contributors to its decline included Bloom Energy, which fell nearly 10%, along with Shake Shack and Beyond Meat, also reporting lower earnings. Currently, the Russell 2000 ETF trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 19.4, compared to 27.5 for a comparable S&P 500 ETF.
