**Sugar Prices Rise Amid India Crop Concerns**
On Friday, October NY world sugar #11 (SBV26) closed at +0.23 (+1.59%), while October London ICE white sugar #5 (SWV26) rose by +4.90 (+1.07%). The increase in sugar prices follows short covering driven by concerns about India’s sugar crop, with the Indian Meteorological Department warning that monsoon rainfall is expected to be below normal, potentially marking the weakest monsoon in 11 years.
As of July 31, India’s cumulative monsoon rainfall was reported at 13% below normal, an improvement from 42% below normal on June 30. Additionally, the impact of an El Niño weather pattern is raising concerns about further disruptions in sugar production across major producers like Brazil, India, and Thailand, supporting bullish price trends. Recent forecasts identify a growing global sugar deficit for the 2026/27 season, with estimates now reaching -1.7 million metric tons (MMT).
