The First Nations Major Projects Coalition (FNMPC) advocates for increased Indigenous ownership in major mining and resource projects in Canada, asserting it could speed up permitting processes and enhance economic outcomes for First Nations. Founded 11 years ago after a group of nations missed a C$5 billion pipeline opportunity due to high financing rates, the FNMPC now supports 186 First Nations across the country in securing equity stakes in resource developments.

Significant projects include Ontario’s electricity transmission initiatives, where First Nations have achieved approximately 50% equity stakes, and the Coastal GasLink pipeline in British Columbia, where Coalition members hold a collective 10% stake. FNMPC CEO Mark Podlasly stated that partnerships with Indigenous communities can align their interests with those of project developers, thereby reducing regulatory delays.

The federal government is actively working to expedite project approvals, with Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announcing plans to lead G20 nations in fast-tracked permitting. The FNMPC emphasizes that meaningful Indigenous participation is vital for the success of mining and energy projects, positioning it as essential for the overall economic competitiveness of Canada.
