Gavin Baker Analyzes AI Stock Valuations
Gavin Baker, Chief Investment Officer of Atreides Management, highlighted a “cross-sectional inefficiency” in AI stock valuations during a recent appearance on the All-In podcast. He noted that current market prices for AI stocks are inconsistent, with some undervalued stocks such as Micron (NASDAQ: MU) trading at lower multiples compared to optical chipmakers like Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ: LITE), which has seen a tenfold increase in its stock price over the past year.
Atreides Management oversees approximately $7 billion in investments and reports Baker achieving a Sharpe ratio of 2.46, indicating superior returns with lower risk compared to average hedge fund performance. Baker’s analysis suggests that if the valuation multiples of memory stocks are accurate, they may outperform high-multiple stocks in a declining market, as all AI-related stocks may rise and fall in a unified cycle.
