Intel Partners with SpaceX and Tesla on Terafab Project
Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) has announced its partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI to develop the Terafab chip manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas. This facility aims to produce semiconductors for SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI and is projected to cost approximately $25 billion. Intel’s involvement is seen as a significant advantage in meeting Musk’s ambitious production goals.
The chip foundry market is highly competitive, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) holding over 70% of the global contract chip manufacturing market, and Intel prepares to bolster its foundry capabilities after reporting a $7 billion operating loss last year. Analysts view this collaboration as a crucial step for Intel to regain competitive ground in advanced chip fabrication.
