This pioneering battery material integrates sodium and additional elements alongside lithium, a metal known for its high cost. Given that lithium-ion batteries currently dominate the market in devices ranging from smartphones to electric vehicles and even satellites, this new composition has the potential to not only drive down battery expenses but also reduce the likelihood of fires, as per Microsoft’s official statement.
An Innovative Approach
As part of the collaboration, Microsoft harnessed advanced AI and high-performance computing to comb through an astonishing 32 million candidates for battery materials, identifying select workable ones within a mere 80-hour window. Ultimately, Microsoft produced a list of 23 materials, five of which were already established.

Significance for Tesla
Tesla heavily relies on lithium-ion batteries for its electric vehicles as well as its energy storage product, Megapack. The battery stands as the most expensive component of an EV and due to its high production costs, electric vehicles are often priced higher than traditional combustion engine vehicles.
Musk on Affordability
Musk has frequently emphasized that affordability remains the primary barrier hindering mass adoption of electric vehicles. During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, he candidly remarked, “I mean, to be totally frank, if our car costs the same as an RAV4, nobody would buy an RAV4 or at least they’re very unlikely to.”
Musk’s Optimism
In a recent X Spaces conversation, Musk reassured that the Earth possesses abundant raw materials for solar energy and lithium batteries, dismissing concerns of scarcity for sustainable energy. He stated, “Even if the only way that you powered all of Industry on Earth and all power, including heating and transport, electrically, you could do that with solar and lithium batteries.”
