Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) function similarly to stocks, but investors buy and sell “units” rather than “shares.” These units can be traded much like stocks and can be created or destroyed based on investor demand. Each week, we track changes in shares outstanding to identify ETFs that are experiencing significant inflows (new units created) or outflows (existing units destroyed). When new units are created, the ETF must purchase the underlying assets, while destroying units means selling those assets. Large cash flows can significantly impact the individual stocks held within these ETFs.
