Iridium Communications Inc. (IRDM) has successfully completed on-air testing of Iridium NTN Direct, becoming the first to use 3GPP-compliant NB-IoT standards for two-way messaging over its low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network. This significant advancement marks a critical step toward commercial service, targeted for 2026, as Iridium positions NTN Direct as a key player in the merging satellite, 5G, and IoT sectors.

Iridium NTN Direct aims to provide a globally available IoT service, facilitating applications ranging from emergency messaging to asset tracking and environmental monitoring. Unlike other satellite services limited by regional constraints, Iridium’s infrastructure offers 100% global coverage, simplifying partner integration and regulatory compliance. The successful tests utilized Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF9151 chipset, reinforcing the project’s credibility as it progresses toward commercial readiness.

Continuing its development, Iridium has formed partnerships with Karrier One and Deutsche Telekom to enhance its NTN Direct capabilities and expand connectivity. With expectations of increasing capital expenditures in 2025, the company anticipates a strong entry into the IoT market, despite facing challenges such as competition and regulatory hurdles.
