“Is a Turnaround Possible for PayPal Stock as a Death Cross Approaches?”

PayPal Faces Technical Indicator Risk Amidst Analyst Optimism

PayPal Holdings Inc. PYPL is nearing a crucial technical threshold known as a Death Cross. This occurs when the 50-day simple moving average dips below the 200-day moving average, signaling bearish market conditions.

Despite witnessing a 23.7% drop in share price year to date, and a 5.7% fall over the past month, analysts at Mizuho maintain a favorable outlook. They have an Outperform rating with a price target set at $96, according to recent reports by Investing.

Warning Signals in PayPal’s Stock Technicals

PayPal Stock finds itself below critical moving averages, underscoring a persistent bearish trend, although some buying pressure is evident. The eight-day simple moving average is at $68.31, and the 20-day average sits at $68.67, both indicating weakness. In contrast, the 50-day average is at $75.49, while the 200-day stands at $75.28, further illustrating a broader downtrend.

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator, currently at -2.21, suggests additional downside risk. Meanwhile, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 32.09 indicates that the stock is nearing oversold conditions.

Mizuho’s Bullish Outlook

Despite the technical challenges facing PayPal, Mizuho remains optimistic about its future. The firm sees substantial growth potential in the company’s Pay with Venmo service, which boasts higher transaction margins compared to PayPal’s traditional checkout option. Mizuho anticipates Pay with Venmo’s Total Payment Volume will grow by over 40% annually, likely resulting in significant growth in overall transaction margin dollars.

With a valuation of 17 times its estimated 2026 earnings per share, PayPal’s multiples are just above the median for established payment firms, though they remain below historical averages. Mizuho asserts that the company’s strategic initiatives—ranging from enhancements in user experience to the adoption of Fastlane—warrant this slight premium.

Can PayPal Turn Its Performance Around?

As the specter of a death cross looms, PayPal continues to pursue its growth strategies. The recent appointment of Joy Chik from Microsoft Corp MSFT to its Board emphasizes a commitment to AI-driven innovation.

Moreover, Apple Inc AAPL‘s decision to permit third-party applications access to its NFC chip could allow PayPal to broaden its tap-to-pay services, marking a significant advancement in mobile payments.

Presently, the trend looks bearish. However, if PayPal’s strategic initiatives come to fruition, the Stock may ultimately defy skeptics and chart a path toward recovery.
