Is Dow Stock Lagging Behind the Overall Dow Performance?

DOW Inc.: Analyzing Recent Performance Amid Market Fluctuations

Dow Inc. (DOW), valued at $25.9 billion, provides a range of materials science solutions tailored for packaging, infrastructure, mobility, and consumer applications both in the United States and globally. Based in Midland, Michigan, the company operates through three primary segments: Packaging & Specialty Plastics, Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure, and Performance Materials & Coatings.

As a large-cap stock, which typically includes companies with valuations exceeding $10 billion, DOW stands as a prominent player in the basic materials sector. It benefits from a robust portfolio of advanced, sustainable products and a favorable global footprint with significant low-cost feedstock positions.

Despite these strengths, DOW has seen shares drop by 41.1% from its 52-week high of $60.69, recorded on April 4, 2022. In the past three months alone, shares have declined 13.4%, underperforming the broader Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI), which fell by 5.8% during the same period.

For a broader perspective, DOW shares dropped 28.9% over the last six months, while the DOWI recorded a small gain. In fact, DOW has plunged 38% over the previous 52 weeks, contrasting sharply with the DOWI’s 6% increase in the same timeframe. This trend remains bearish as DOW has consistently traded below its 200-day and 50-day moving averages since October.

DOW’s stock further declined by 6.1% following disappointing fourth-quarter earnings reported on January 30. The company experienced a 2% drop in net sales, totaling $10.4 billion. Additionally, its earnings per share (EPS) fell short of Wall Street expectations by 100%, a significant letdown for investors.

In comparison, DOW’s competitor, Valhi, Inc. (VHI), has faced similar challenges, with its shares decreasing by 35.2% over the past six months and 10.1% over the last year.

Nonetheless, analysts maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook for DOW. The stock holds a consensus rating of “Moderate Buy” from a panel of 19 analysts. The mean price target for DOW is set at $46, suggesting a potential upside of 28.7% from current market levels.
