Intel’s Ohio Fab Progress and Future Plans
Intel is ramping up hiring at its Ohio chip manufacturing facility, aiming for an accelerated construction timeline to support the Intel 14A process, which is set to launch in 2027. CEO Lip-Bu Tan’s recent comments indicated a shift in strategy, focusing on securing external customers to ensure production by 2030, a target pushed back from previous projections.
In 2022, Intel invested $28 billion in two advanced chip factories in Ohio, initially slated for completion by 2025. Delays were attributed to difficulties in attracting external customers. However, recent job postings from the construction firm and improved yield rates for the Intel 18A process suggest potential momentum for Intel 14A, with industry analysts noting yields have surpassed 60%.
With a severe shortage in advanced manufacturing capacity at dominant foundry leader TSMC, Intel may be strategically positioned to capture demand for chip production. The next major updates regarding the Ohio fabs and potential external customers are anticipated in Intel’s forthcoming quarterly report.
