Lamborghini Shifts Focus from EVs to PHEVs in Strategic Move

Lamborghini, owned by Volkswagen AG (VWAGY), has abandoned plans for its first fully electric vehicle (EV) following an internal assessment of customer demand. The decision, announced in October 2023, concludes that interest in a purely electric supercar is minimal within its core market.

The previously anticipated fully electric model, dubbed the Lanzador, will instead be developed as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). This new strategy aims to align with the performance preferences of Lamborghini buyers while reducing emissions. The company plans to ultimately achieve a fully hybrid lineup by 2030, while ongoing projects, such as a fully electric Urus, have been placed on hold.

Lamborghini’s pivot underscores that traditional combustion engines remain a significant part of its identity, with V8 and V12 models still valued by consumers. The automaker will continue to assess the viability of fully electric models, aiming to revisit the EV market around 2030.
