Live Cattle Make Strides
Live cattle showcased their tenacity as they closed the Monday session with contracts surging 27 cents to reach $1.27 at the day’s close. Investors witnessed a stirring sight, their value bolstered. Today marked the first notice day for April live cattle, a historical milestone worth noting.
Feeders Suffer Setback
Conversely, feeder cattle experienced a setback as they posted front month strength of $1.45, only to see the rest of the board plunging 35 cents to $1.05. Like a rugged cowboy in a dusty rodeo, feeders faced their challenges head-on, showcasing resilience amidst the volatility.
Last week’s cash action painted a vivid picture, with the south ranging between $183-184 and the North between $187-189. The market buzzed with activity on Monday, largely compiling showlists, akin to actors preparing for their grand performance.
The CME Feeder Cattle index on April 5th displayed a decline of 35 cents to $248.62, signaling a shift in the market dynamics. USDA’s report on OKC’s auction receipts revealed a significant uptick, with 6,800 head recorded on Monday, up from last year’s 4,978 head. However, feeder sales were noted as facing a dip, falling $8-12 from the previous week.
Wholesale Boxed Beef Prices Surge
In a dramatic turn of events, USDA’s Wholesale Boxed Beef prices soared in the Monday afternoon report. Choice beef marked a dramatic comeback, rising $4.90 to hit $302.07, while Select climbed $5.57 to reach $300.27. The gap between Chc/Sel slimmed down to a mere $1.80, showcasing the fierce competition within the market.
As the day unfolded, the estimated livestock slaughter stood at 121,000 head for Monday, according to USDA’s figures. This marked an impressive 11,000 head increase from the previous Monday and a significant surge of 9,192 head from the same Monday last year. The market dynamics played out like a captivating drama, with each turn more riveting than the last.
