The Bright Horizon: LyondellBasell (LYB) Collaborates with Encavis AM in Renewable Energy Venture

A Gigantic Leap Towards a Greener Future

LyondellBasell Industries N.V. LYB and Encavis Asset Management AG have sealed a momentous deal in the realm of sustainable energy. The two entities have inked a power purchase agreement (PPA) to secure 208 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity production from the monumental solar complex in Bartow, Germany. This solar park, poised to become one of Germany’s largest, marks a significant shift towards a more sustainable energy landscape.

With this 12-year PPA, Encavis AM is committed to supplying LyondellBasell with approximately 210 gigawatt-hours of solar power annually, a figure that can power around 56,500 European households from 2025 onwards. By leveraging this latest agreement, LyondellBasell is set to surpass its renewable electricity target, exceeding 90% of its total goal.

PPAs hold a strategic position in LYB’s strategy to curb absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions. This recent collaboration is poised to accelerate the adoption and utilization of clean energy solutions across various sectors in Germany. As of the company’s 2020 baseline, almost 15% of scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions emanate from power usage. LyondellBasell, with an ambitious target of sourcing at least 50% of its electricity from renewable origins by 2030, has a firm foundation, starting from 2020 levels.

Embracing the Solar Beam in Bartow

The solar park, strategically located about 150 kilometers north of Berlin, has been meticulously chosen by Encavis AM to maximize solar radiation and operational efficiency. The inaugural phase of construction is slated for completion by the summer of 2025, with an anticipated overall electricity generating capacity of 260 MW.

Shining Bright on the Financial Horizon

The past year has proved to be quite luminous for LyondellBasell, with shares surging by an impressive 12.3% while its industry witnessed a 4% downturn.

The anticipations for the first quarter of 2024 tip towards sluggish demand and economic uncertainty. While low ethane raw material costs continue to bolster profits in North American Olefins & Polyolefins, regional demand is showing signs of modest improvement. Expectations entail oxyfuels and refining margins hovering around standard winter levels.

Projections hint at an upswing in seasonal demand as spring and summer unfold across global markets. LYB’s strategy includes running assets in Olefins & Polyolefins Americas at an approximately 80% capacity, and Olefins & Polyolefins EAI and Intermediates & Derivatives assets at roughly 75% capacity.
