Shark Tank host and billionaire Mark Cuban recently revealed that acquiring the Dallas Mavericks was a serendipitous adventure, driven more by passion than profit.
A Billion-Dollar Ride: In December, Cuban divested a controlling stake in the Mavericks to the Adelson and Dumont families in a deal pegging the team’s value at an impressive $3.5 billion.
Back in 2000, Cuban took a leap of faith by snagging the Mavericks for a paltry sum of $285 million when the team was scraping the bottom of the NBA barrel.
‘It Was All About Fun’
Cuban’s impulse buy of the Mavericks came hot on the heels of a windfall from the $5.7 billion sale of his media venture Broadcast.com to Yahoo, which fattened his pockets by a cool $1.4 billion.
“It was all about fun, it wasn’t like I’m going to buy this thing,” shared Cuban during a candid chat on The Draymond Green Show.
Reflecting on his journey, Cuban exclaimed, “I’m the luckiest m*********** in the world, right, you know, to come where I come from and then to have multiple Bs next to your name. I never imagined that.”
Driven by his father’s sage advice on savoring life’s moments, Cuban set out to enjoy the fruits of his labor while striving for financial autonomy.
The Mavs Turnaround
Cuban’s stewardship has steered the Mavericks to a remarkable fifth place as the regular season nears its end, marking a dramatic turnaround from their dismal past.
Recounting his strategy, Cuban disclosed his commitment to do “whatever it takes to win” to his team members. He relied on the prowess of revered player Dirk Nowitzki and a radical move of assigning a personal development coach to each player.
“Once the guys believed that winning was the goal as opposed to just making money, attitudes changed, efforts went up, and the rest is history,” Cuban noted.
‘Never Thought I’d Sell’
Cuban’s bold gamble on the Mavericks has paid off handsomely, with his initial $285 million bet ballooning over 12 times to a staggering $3.5 billion by 2023.
Despite weathering a championship drought from 2000 to 2011, Cuban stood by Nowitzki, solidifying their bond in thick and thin.
Looking ahead, Cuban retains a minority stake in the Mavericks, a testament to his enduring passion for the game.
