Meta Platforms Inc. has disabled the cameras on thousands of its AI glasses after discovering users tampering with indicator lights that show when recording is in progress. The company stated that a recent software update impacted less than 0.1% of all sold pairs. While Meta hasn’t disclosed total sales figures since the glasses launched in 2021, 7 million pairs were sold in 2025 alone, indicating a potential impact on thousands of devices.
The indicator light was designed to alert individuals nearby when videos or photos are being captured, but some users drilled out or obscured the LED, raising significant privacy concerns. Meta’s update has closed this loophole, preventing users from recording before disabling the indicator. Users who permanently removed the LED will lose camera functionality entirely, while those who merely covered it can restore functionality by removing the obstruction.
