**Meta Platforms Inc. (META)** is set to expand its Hyperion data center in **Richland Parish, Louisiana**, from an initial capacity of just over **2 gigawatts** to **5 gigawatts**, more than doubling its original plan to support advanced AI model training. The total investment for this project will exceed **$50 billion**, making it one of the largest AI infrastructure developments globally.
Construction commenced in **December 2024**, resulting in over **$1.6 billion** in contracts awarded to local businesses, with plans to invest more than **$1 billion** in local infrastructure improvements. The project is projected to create over **1,000 jobs** in a community with approximately **20,000** residents. Notably, due to increased tax revenues linked to the development, local teachers have received annual bonuses of up to **$50,000**—four times last year’s amount.
Meta has also pledged a **$5 million** donation to **Louisiana Delta Community College** for scholarships aimed at training future data center workers. However, the expansion has faced scrutiny from environmental groups regarding the high energy demands of large AI data centers. Meta has committed to fund its energy and infrastructure needs independently, promising an estimated **$2 billion** in customer savings over two decades through its agreement with **Entergy Louisiana**.
