Meta Platforms Launches New AI-Driven Hardware
At the Meta Connect 2026 event held on September 23-24, Meta Platforms unveiled a range of new hardware devices, including lightweight virtual reality glasses, a new version of Ray-Ban smart glasses, and the Muse Charm, a handheld AI agent device. These innovations aim to facilitate seamless interactions with its Muse AI agent, which surpassed ChatGPT in downloads for iOS in the U.S. and Canada within its first 12 days of availability.
Despite these advancements, Meta faces significant challenges in dethroning Apple’s iPhone, which dominates the consumer tech landscape with over 2.5 billion active devices globally, over half of which are iPhones. Apple’s iPhone sales increased by more than 20% year-over-year during the first nine months of fiscal 2026, highlighting the brand’s strong position in AI interactions.
Meta’s capital expenditures for AI are projected between $130 billion and $145 billion in 2026, as the company aims to strengthen its role in the AI market while leveraging its 3.6 billion daily active users across its suite of apps for monetization.
