Meta Platforms Inc. (META) is scaling back its employee monitoring initiative known as the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), following significant internal pushback. The program aimed to track computer usage, including keystrokes and mouse clicks, to enhance AI training. Over 1,500 employees signed a petition opposing the program.
In response, Meta modified the initiative, allowing employees to pause data collection for up to 30 minutes and request exemption from participation. Changes were also made to reduce its impact on laptop battery life and internet performance. Despite these adjustments, Meta maintains that the data gathered is essential for improving AI and is used solely for training purposes, amidst concerns about employee privacy and recent job cuts affecting approximately 2,000 staff members.
