Meta Platforms Inc. is initiating a voluntary program asking certain individual contributors in its Applied AI (AAI) division to return to management roles as part of a reorganization. This move follows the reassignment of approximately 7,000 employees to AAI, including former managers who transitioned to individual contributor positions.
The restructuring reflects a partial reversal of Meta’s strategy to create flatter organizational teams and reduce middle management, aiming for increased efficiency while augmenting its investment in artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, the company reduced its workforce by about 10%, impacting managers significantly. Meta has also previously allowed some employees to opt-out of AAI after expressing concerns over their reassignment.
