META’s Closed-Loop Cooling: A Catalyst for AI Growth?

Meta Platforms is enhancing its AI infrastructure by implementing closed-loop liquid cooling in the majority of its newest AI-optimized data centers. This system aims to efficiently manage heat from powerful GPUs, reducing water consumption and enabling higher GPU density, which supports greater computing capacity without expanding data-center space. Meta spent $31.1 billion on capital expenditures in Q2 2026 and forecasts full-year expenditures between $130-$145 billion to maximize computing capacity through 2026 and 2027.

In addition, through reinforcement learning, Meta has successfully decreased energy consumption by air-cooling supply fans by an average of 20% and reduced water use by 4%. This efficiency is crucial as the company expands its AI initiatives, which include recommendations and advertising, as well as personal and business agent development.

Despite strong investments, Meta has faced challenges, such as a 13.5% decline in share prices year-to-date amid competitive pressures from rivals like Reddit and Snap, who are also advancing in AI technology and tools.
