Metso Unveils HPGRSense for Enhanced Monitoring of High-Pressure Grinding Rolls
Metso has introduced a new monitoring solution aimed at enhancing the efficiency of its next-generation HRCe high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR).

Unique to the industry, HPGRSense is a stand-alone system that enables continuous simultaneous monitoring of the rolls without the need to halt processes for inspections.
“HPGRSense is transforming roll inspection and wear measurement on HPGR rolls while avoiding the limitations of existing laser-based solutions. This system safely and remotely provides operators with full visibility into the rolls’ condition during operation, enhancing their understanding of the rolls’ state,” stated Stefan Sakendorf, director of HRC at Metso.
The device employs an array of sensors to monitor the roll surface. Additionally, it utilizes advanced analytics to detect anomalies and measure wear. This capability allows operators to quickly address roll damage, predict service life, and optimize spare stock. Enhanced insights empower operators to maintain maximum productivity of their HRCe systems,” he added.
Evolution of HPGR Technology
Metso launched its HRC high-pressure grinding rolls designed for mineral processing circuits in 2014, setting a benchmark for HPGR technologies. This innovation is recognized for significant improvements in energy efficiency, extended wear life, and increased throughput. It also established industry-wide acceptance of flanges as a superior grinding method.
The HRCe, the latest evolution in this product line, continues to deliver benefits in wear, circulating load, and power consumption, while enhancing layout and serviceability. Since its launch in 2020, the HRCe has seen reduced capital expenditure requirements compared to earlier models. Its design improvements enable maximum productivity, based on proven technology that enhances grinding efficiency.
