Microsoft’s Copilot Faces Challenges Amid AI Competition

Microsoft’s AI assistant Copilot has struggled to gain traction, boasting only 15 million paid subscribers compared to the 450 million total Microsoft 365 subscribers. The company’s stock, recently down over 17% in the past six months, closed its worst quarter since 2008 as investors express disappointment over Copilot’s performance.

CEO Satya Nadella has initiated an overhaul dubbed “Code Red” aimed at improving Copilot’s performance and user experience, which will include the rollout of Microsoft 365 E7 with a fully integrated AI stack. Additionally, GitHub Copilot Pro Plus subscribers have increased by 75% year over year, totaling 4.7 million, indicating some success within specific segments.

Despite these developments, concerns remain about Microsoft’s ability to compete with AI peers like OpenAI and Anthropic, with analysts suggesting a need for stronger cross-selling strategies to convert a larger share of the vast 450 million Microsoft 365 subscriber base into paying Copilot users.
