Live cattle futures saw gains of 55 cents to $2 on Monday, October 2, marking the first notice day for October live cattle. Cash trade prices were reported at $230 in the North and $233 in the South. Feeder cattle futures rose significantly, increasing $4.50 to $4.825, with the CME Feeder Cattle Index up $0.94 to $362.57.
The USDA reported that wholesale boxed beef prices were higher, with Choice boxes up 66 cents to $362.77 and Select boxes rising $1.95 to $347.33. Last week, federally inspected cattle slaughter was estimated at 557,000 head, which is 2,000 head above the previous week but down 54,571 from the same week last year.
