**Sugar Prices Decline Amid Improved Monsoon Conditions in India**
On Wednesday, October NY world sugar #11 closed down 0.14 points (0.94%), while October London ICE white sugar #5 declined by 4.60 points (0.98%). This drop comes as India’s Meteorological Department reported that cumulative monsoon rainfall improved to 19% below normal as of July 22, a notable shift from 42% below normal on June 30.
Despite the declines, sugar losses were tempered by a rise in crude oil prices, with WTI crude oil increasing over 2% to a six-week high, encouraging sugar mills worldwide to redirect more cane towards ethanol production. Currently, funds hold a record 58,847 net-long positions in London ICE white sugar, which could amplify price fluctuations. The market remains concerned about the potential impact of an El Niño weather event on global sugar production, particularly in Brazil, India, and Thailand, which are the world’s leading sugar producers.
