Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of 4.3 million vehicles, including popular F-Series pickup trucks, due to a software issue that may lead to loss of brake and turn signal lights while towing. This recall is part of a broader trend, as the company recalled a record 12.9 million vehicles in 2025, indicating ongoing challenges with vehicle quality. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 407 incidents related to this issue, though there have been no crashes reported.
Fortunately for Ford, this specific recall can be remedied with an over-the-air software update, which minimizes the financial impact compared to traditional hardware repairs. Despite this, the company’s warranty expenses increased significantly, reaching around $2 billion in the second quarter of 2024, up $800 million from the previous quarter, which poses a concern for investors. Historically, warranty expenses average about 1.6% of sales, while Ford’s current figure is approximately 4%.
