Key Points

  • Iranian drone strikes targeted Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City on February 28, causing significant disruptions to global helium supply by impacting the world’s largest helium production facility, which accounts for approximately one-third of global supply.

  • Following the attacks, spot helium prices doubled within weeks, prompting major semiconductor companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and South Korea’s Samsung and SK Hynix to rethink their inventory strategies.

  • Air Products and Chemicals and Linde PLC hold a dominant share of the global helium market, gaining pricing power amidst these supply constraints.

On February 28, Iranian drone strikes hit Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, the largest helium production facility globally, which produces about 33% of the world’s supply. QatarEnergy declared force majeure shortly after the attacks. This facility’s damage has contributed to heightened helium prices, projected to persist due to limited alternative sources and extensive infrastructure development times.

Within weeks of the attack, helium spot prices surged, significantly affecting semiconductor manufacturers with TSMC consuming around 500,000 cubic feet of helium annually. In April, U.S. distributor Airgas also declared force majeure on helium shipments. With existing production muted, companies like Air Products and Linde command substantial pricing power in the industry, emphasizing helium’s critical role in semiconductor manufacturing.

As of early May, a ceasefire initiated in April remains tenuous, with renewed hostilities highlighted by repeated incidents involving Iranian forces. Even as ceasefire negotiations continue, experts warn against underestimating the damage to helium infrastructure and the protracted recovery ahead.
