Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) has reached an agreement with a bipartisan coalition of 52 attorneys general across the United States regarding enhanced online safety measures for teenagers. Announced on Wednesday, this agreement requires Meta to implement automatic protections for users under 18 that will remain in effect for the next decade, pending judicial approval.
The comprehensive safety measures include features like Time Limit, Night Mode, School Mode, Autoplay Control, and enhanced parental controls. Furthermore, the agreement entails a payment of approximately $18 billion towards youth online safety initiatives, with participating states set to receive around 70% of these funds, approximately $12.7 billion, over a 10-year period.
As part of the settlement, Meta plans to establish an independent social media research foundation and will share user data to support research on teen well-being. An independent auditor will oversee Meta’s compliance with the agreement annually for five years.
