NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) announced on Thursday its significant acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, marking one of its largest deals to date. This acquisition not only enhances Nvidia’s presence in the AI sector but also solidifies its role in the open-source AI ecosystem. Following the announcement, Nvidia’s shares rose by 1.8%.

Hugging Face is renowned for its platform that supports over 18 million developers and companies, offering access to over 3 million AI models and serving more than 200,000 organizations. As part of the agreement, approximately $11.9 billion will be allocated to Hugging Face shareholders, with Nvidia providing up to $1 billion in retention incentives for employees. The transaction is anticipated to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approvals.

This strategic move comes as major tech customers increasingly develop their own AI chips, positioning Nvidia to capture additional demand for its computing infrastructure while expanding its customer base.
