Nvidia and AMD Focus on CPU Growth Amidst AI Boom
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) are positioning themselves for significant opportunities in the central processing unit (CPU) market, as both companies aim to capitalize on the surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Nvidia projects $20 billion in stand-alone CPU sales for 2023, while AMD holds a 39% CPU market share, with significant dominance in the desktop sector at over 52%.
Nvidia’s entry into the CPU market follows its successful track record in graphics processing units (GPUs), where it continues to lead. The company plans to launch its first standalone CPU this fall as part of a strategy to capture a share of the estimated $200 billion CPU market. In contrast, despite Nvidia’s potential to lead in the data center segment, AMD maintains a strong position in general personal computing, where it may pose a challenge for Nvidia’s expansion efforts.
