Nvidia Enters CPU Market
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) is launching its first stand-alone central processing unit (CPU), named the Vera CPU, as part of its upcoming Vera Rubin update, designed for use in AI applications. This strategic move into the CPU market comes as the company aims to capture a share of the projected $200 billion stand-alone CPU market, with an anticipated revenue of $20 billion this year.
Currently, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) dominates the CPU market with a 60% share, followed by Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) at nearly 39%. Nvidia claims its Vera CPU outperforms x86 processors by 1.8 times in task completion, showcasing a pivotal shift in AI technologies that now find CPU management essential.
The Vera CPU is set to ship in Q3 2023, while Nvidia is partnering with Microsoft to develop the RTX Spark superchip for Windows PCs, integrating AI enhancements for premium products. As Nvidia seeks to position itself as a leading CPU supplier, the competition with Intel and AMD remains significant but could reshape the landscape of the CPU market.
