A stellar lineup of industry speakers is set to headline the one-day symposium on battery electric vehicle (BEV) safety in mining operations. The event, now in its fourth year, promises to offer vital insights and best practices for managing the growing usage of electric vehicles in the mining sector.

Notable Speakers

The symposium will feature presentations by distinguished personalities including George Pirie, Ontario Minister of Mines; Norm Ladouceur, corporate manager of health and safety at Agnico Eagle Mines; David Lyon, president of Zero Nexus; and Anthony Griffiths, manager of business development at MacLean Engineering. Additionally, Gertjan Bekkers, VP of mines technical services at Torex Gold, and Mike Mayhew, founder of Mayhew Performance, will contribute their expertise to the event.

The discussions are expected to range from the significance of the mining industry in the electric vehicle supply chain to the latest research on training opportunities aimed at driving the adoption of heavy-duty BEVs in Canada and beyond. Further, the symposium will witness insights on handling electric vehicle and battery fires, comparative environmental impact studies between diesel and electric vehicles in mining, and a presentation on the technical services aspect of BEV integration.

Event Details

This highly anticipated symposium is scheduled to run from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm Eastern time. The event will conclude with an exclusive tour of the Cambrian College electric vehicle research lab, providing attendees with a firsthand look into cutting-edge industry research.

Mike Commito, director of Cambrian R&D, emphasized the crucial role of the symposium and the college’s commitment to driving the safe adoption of EV technology in mining. As stated by Commito, “We are definitely seeing an increase in EV use in the mining sector, and that has led to an increase in both EV maintenance training and EV research here at Cambrian R&D. We are working with industry partners, particularly in mining, to advance the adoption, use, and safety of EV technology in mining, and this symposium is a great way to share some knowledge and best practices.”

Furthermore, the event aims to facilitate shared learnings and contribute to the advancement of electric vehicle safety in mining operations. Those unable to attend in person can opt for virtual participation through a video livestream. Registrations for the symposium are open and can be accessed here.
