OpenAI Partners with Broadcom for AI Hardware Development
OpenAI and Broadcom have entered a multiyear partnership to co-develop custom AI hardware, focusing on 10 gigawatts of AI accelerators specifically tailored for OpenAI’s applications. This move aims to reduce reliance on Nvidia’s GPUs, which have dominated the AI hardware market. Broadcom predicts its AI semiconductor revenue will double to $8.2 billion this year, amid increasing competition from other tech leaders like Alphabet and Microsoft.
This partnership highlights a broader shift within the AI industry as companies seek specialized hardware. As a part of this trend, OpenAI’s competition, Anthropic, is also moving towards custom chip solutions by expanding its use of Google’s TPU, which further emphasizes the decreasing reliance on Nvidia’s general-purpose hardware.
In fiscal year 2025, Broadcom experienced a significant revenue increase of 24%, totaling $63.8 billion. The partnership with OpenAI comes amid strong financial indicators, including a 40% rise in diluted earnings per share and a net profit margin of 36.57%.
